Kosovan literary figure and political thinker Rexhep Qosja dies aged 89

TIRANA, April 23 – Rexhep Qosja, a leading Kosovan literary scholar, public intellectual and political thinker, has passed away aged 89.

Born in 1936 in Vuthaj (Montenegro), Qosja became one of the most influential voices in Albanian-language intellectual life. He worked across literature, academia and public debate, with influence in both Kosovo and Albania.

Universities and researchers widely used his major academic output. He produced multi-volume studies on Albanian literature that remain standard references in the field. He also wrote fiction, including the novel “Death Comes to Me from Such Eyes”, which was translated into several languages.

Qosja also took a consistent role in public and political discussion. He addressed questions of national identity, democratic development and the political future of Albanians in the Balkans, particularly in the post-Yugoslav period. His interventions made him a regular reference point in cultural and political debate across the region.
