‘As 1945 dawned’: Historic Albanian Play Returns to Memory

Teodor Laço crafts Duke gdhirë viti 1945 as a dramatic reflection of a nation in transition. The National Theatre brings the work to the stage in 1976, under the direction of Dhimitër Pecani, transforming the text into a vivid stage experience.

The play captures the tense dawn of 1945, when Albania stands between war’s ruins and a new political order. Through layered characters and charged dialogue, it explores uncertainty, ideological rupture, and the emotional weight of change.

On stage, personal stories merge with collective history. The drama builds atmosphere through conflict, silence, and moral tension, turning political transition into human drama.

The production becomes part of the socialist realism tradition, yet it also preserves a strong theatrical identity, where history is not only narrated but emotionally experienced.
