Albania, U.S. and Greece sign energy agreement

TIRANA, April 28 – Albania has signed an energy agreement with the United States and Greece on energy diversification and the strengthening of energy independence.

Prime Minister Edi Rama described the United States as a key partner in consolidating energy security and said Albania is investing to diversify its energy portfolio. Speaking at an energy security event, he recalled that a decade ago the sector suffered from weak management and systemic inefficiencies.

He referred to a period when electricity supply remained limited and uneven. He also said part of the population effectively covered losses within the system. Rama noted that the state distribution company stood close to bankruptcy in the past decade and relied on government subsidies, while its debt exceeded 5 percent of GDP.

He said the situation has since changed, adding that energy now determines security, economic strength, and Albania’s regional and European ambitions. He said the country has completed a difficult reform process and confirmed that consumers now pay for their own usage after the removal of previous imbalances.

The Prime Minister said Albania continues to invest in reducing dependence on hydropower and imports, with the aim of becoming a net exporter of fully renewable energy within the current mandate. He underlined the strategic role of cooperation with the United States, describing it as central to shared energy security and regional stability.
