Government backs “After School” programme, doubles pay for teachers and expands participation

TIRANA, April 29 – Following a government meeting, Minister of Education Mirela Kumbaro presents new decisions. She focuses on the “After School” programme. She says the initiative has developed in different formats for over a decade. She adds that the programme will now expand further to give students more opportunities.

In this context, she explains that schools with major investments will open after-class activities. She says they will also enrich educational programmes. These include a Foreign Languages Olympiad. She also says schools will introduce dedicated spaces for students’ meals. At the same time, the Council of Ministers approves extended school time. It combines compulsory teaching hours with the “After School” programme. It also doubles payment for additional hours, from 500 to 1,000 Lek per hour.

Kumbaro says the financial adjustment is essential for implementation. She confirms the rate increases from 500 to 1000 old Lek per 60 minutes. Meanwhile, the government expands participation beyond active teachers. It includes retired teachers, experts, and specialists in arts, music, sports, and crafts. This allows wider contribution after compulsory teaching hours.

She adds that the measure strengthens the legal and financial framework of the programme. She says it improves students’ educational experience. She also says it brings schools closer to the community.
