Golem substation upgrade strengthens coastal energy supply

TIRANA, April 30 – Energy and Infrastructure Minister Enea Karakaçi inspects the Golemi electricity substation in Golem, Kavaja, as part of ongoing investments to improve power supply in coastal and tourist areas. He says the upgrade doubles capacity from 31.5 MW to 80 MW and will secure long-term supply for around 50,000 residents in the Golem and Mali i Robit areas. He links the project to a wider 2026 modernization plan led by OSSH (Electricity Distribution System Operator) for the coastal energy network.

Meanwhile, OSSH head Bendian Dalipi says the substation supplies the entire coastal corridor from Golem to Qerret and faces rising demand due to rapid urban development. He also confirms additional works at the Porto Romano substation, where OSSH adds a second transformer and increases capacity from 50 MW to 100 MW. In parallel, the company replaces the 6 kV network in the Golem beach area with 20 kV cabins and builds new distribution lines to improve reliability and reduce faults.

At the same time, Karakaçi stresses that these investments reduce network losses and ensure stable supply for households and businesses, especially during the tourist season. He also notes upgrades in both medium- and low-voltage networks, while confirming that the first phase of works in Spille has already been completed and a second phase will follow to address remaining issues.

Finally, Dalipi says OSSH improves network balancing in cooperation with OST (Transmission System Operator) and strengthens operational staffing during summer, adding that the system enters the tourist season in better technical condition than a year earlier.
