Albulena Haxhiu Sets June 7 as Date for New Elections in Kosovo

In a statement to the media, Albulena Haxhiu announced that June 7 has been set as the date for holding new early parliamentary elections.

Haxhiu’s decision comes shortly after a meeting with leaders and representatives of political parties in the country to determine the election date.

“After hearing the proposals of political parties and assessing constitutional deadlines, the organizational needs of the Central Election Commission, and the importance of broad citizen participation in this process, I have decided that the early elections for the Assembly of Kosovo will be held on June 7,” Haxhiu said.

“In the coming days, I will meet with relevant institutions, requesting the presence of international election observer missions for the June 7 elections. From here, I wish the Central Election Commission staff success in safeguarding the will of the citizens. I also wish political parties a successful campaign and citizens the ability to freely and without pressure exercise their right to vote,” she added.

The new elections come after the Assembly failed to elect a new president within the constitutional deadline, plunging the country into a new political crisis.

The Assembly had until midnight on Tuesday to elect the head of state, following the expiration of Vjosa Osmani’s mandate at the beginning of April.
