North Macedonia Begins Regular Gas Purchases from Azerbaijan at Higher Cost

North Macedonia has begun regularly purchasing gas from Azerbaijan since the beginning of 2026, although this supply is nearly twice as expensive as Russian gas, according to the Russian ambassador to the country, Dmitry Zykov.

Zykov stated that in November 2024, the state oil company SOCAR and North Macedonia’s state energy company ESMsigned a memorandum of understanding to expand cooperation in the energy sector, providing for long-term natural gas supplies.

According to him, in the first two months of 2026, Azerbaijani gas accounted for 32% of physical supplies in the Macedonian market, while Russian gas held a 28% share.

The ambassador added that supplies from Azerbaijan are delivered through the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, passing through Greece and Bulgaria before reaching North Macedonia.
