Albania’s Academy of Sciences marked the 149th anniversary of the birth of Franz Nopcsa, a renowned paleontologist, geologist and one of the most important figures in Albanology.
Franz Nopcsa was born on 3 May 1877 in Transylvania, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, into an aristocratic family of Romanian origin.
Nopcsa studied at the “Maria-Theresianum” lyceum in Vienna and later emerged as one of Europe’s leading scientists at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
He conducted extensive research in the Balkans and made key contributions to paleontology, paleophysiology, geology and Albanology.
Nopcsa traveled widely in Northern Albania, exploring remote areas and studying Albanian language, customs and social structures. He documented his findings through field research in ethnology, geography and culture.
His personal archives, known as the “Nopcsa Diaries,” include detailed notes, maps, sketches and illustrations from his expeditions in Albania and the Balkans.
Nopcsa published more than 186 scientific works, many of which focus on Albania, including studies on tribal structures, customary law, dialects and cultural traditions in northern Albania.
He also engaged in political discussions of his time and, in 1913, even offered himself as a candidate for the Albanian throne.
His life ended tragically in 1933.
