TIRANA, May 5 – The Spile Cave in Himara is one of the most distinctive coastal sites in Albania. The site has undergone an intervention to improve its year-round tourism appeal.
At the same time, the cave links to the myth of the Cyclops described by Homer around 2,700 years ago. It is also known as the “Cave of Odysseus” or the “Cave of the Cyclops”, based on the encounter between Odysseus and the Cyclops.
Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Blendi Gonxhja visited the site recently. He said the cave holds strong cultural and tourism potential for the area. The project focuses on protection and interpretation of the site.
In addition, the intervention preserves the natural and historical integrity of the cave. New lighting improves visibility inside the cave. It also allows visits during evening hours.
As a result, the site now offers a new visitor experience. It also strengthens the cave’s position as a Riviera landmark.
At the same time, the project includes redevelopment of the area in front of the cave. Authorities plan a full cultural and tourism route for the Himara region. The plan links natural heritage with cultural heritage.
The project is financed by the World Bank through the Albanian Development Fund. It is implemented with the National Institute of Cultural Heritage. Cultural Heritage without Borders Albania designed the project. The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Vlora monitors the works.
