European Parliament report published: MEPs assess Albania’s progress in EU accession negotiations

Members of the European Parliament in its Committee on Foreign Affairs have praised Albania’s commitment to the European Union accession process, highlighting the progress made in accession talks and the need for full implementation of adopted reforms.

In a report adopted with 58 votes in favor, 7 against, and 7 abstentions, MEPs welcomed Albania’s dedication to European integration and the fast pace of reforms in recent years, while calling for the legislation adopted to be implemented in practice.

However, the report emphasizes that the country still faces significant challenges, such as political polarization, strengthening the rule of law, and consolidating the fight against corruption.

Taking into account Albania’s ambition to conclude negotiations by the end of 2027, MEPs warn that the quality of reforms will be decisive for the timeline of accession.

Regarding the rule of law, the report notes that the judiciary continues to face political pressure and threats, which may undermine its independence. Corruption also remains a serious concern, with calls for stronger investigations, prosecutions, and convictions in high-level cases.

The report also addresses organized crime, calling for a more effective fight against money laundering and drug trafficking networks.

As for media and public administration, MEPs call for stronger protection of freedom of expression, as well as reforms to ensure meritocracy and the depoliticization of the civil service.

At the same time, Albania’s full alignment with EU foreign and security policy is welcomed, along with its role in regional stability.

The rapporteur Andreas Schieder (S&D, Austria) stated that Albania is one of the frontrunner countries in the enlargement process, noting that the goal of closing negotiations by 2027 is a realistic perspective, while also emphasizing the importance of the social dimension of integration and the protection of workers’ rights.
