Rama: Do Not Let EU Membership Process Be Held Hostage

Prime Minister Edi Rama urged unity to safeguard Albania’s EU accession process. He warned against any attempt to derail it.

First, he spoke at the Socialist Party Assembly in Gjirokastër. There, he focused on EU integration. He described negotiations as tough and complex.

Next, he stressed that a dedicated team leads the talks. The team represents Albania and includes government and independent institutions. As a result, he said progress depends on daily work across the country.

Meanwhile, he underlined the role of the Socialist Party. He linked it directly to both parliament and government. Therefore, he said their performance shapes negotiation success.

He then set a timeline. He said Albania aims to close negotiations by 2027. After that, member states could ratify the agreement by 2029.

However, he warned about political risks. He said a weak mandate could delay progress. In turn, he added, opponents could block the process.

At the same time, he rejected personal ambition. Instead, he framed the effort as a national mission. He insisted that no one should hold the EU path hostage.

Furthermore, he called for unity within the party. He urged members to stay focused. He also warned about disinformation. According to him, rivals spread false narratives to disrupt progress.

Even so, he acknowledged shortcomings. Yet, he defended the government’s record. He said Albania stands in its strongest position yet.

In addition, he highlighted economic growth. He said GDP rose from under €10 billion to €27 billion. Moreover, he said it could reach €35 billion this decade. He added that foreign investment hit €1.6 billion and could double. Likewise, income per capita rose from €3,000 to €11,000 and could reach €15,000.

Finally, he pointed to tourism. He said arrivals increased from 2 million to 12 million. Notably, he said most visitors are foreign. He cited Gjirokastër as a clear example. He said the city has transformed and will continue to grow.
