Former Speaker of Parliament Servet Pëllumbi Passes Away at 89

Former Speaker of Parliament Servet Pëllumbi has died at the age of 89.

He co-founded the Socialist Party of Albania. He shaped the country’s democratic transition. Colleagues respected his integrity and leadership.

He was born in Korça. He studied at the University of Saint Petersburg. He earned a PhD in Literature. He began his career as a lecturer in Korça. He later taught at the University of Tirana.

He joined the leadership of the Party of Labour. He moved into politics at a senior level. In 1990, he became Deputy Chairman of the Socialist Party. He held the post until 1996. He led key political campaigns. He opposed the constitutional referendum. He supported efforts to secure the release of Fatos Nano.

He served as one of the longest-standing members of Parliament. He contributed actively to its work. He played a role in major parliamentary committees.

His death marks a significant loss for Albanian politics. It also affects the legacy of the democratic transition.

Taulant Balla reacted on social media. He praised Pëllumbi’s role and leadership. He said Pëllumbi gave lasting value to Parliament and the Socialist Party.
