TIRANA, May 6 – Prishtina hosts a full day of commemorative, cultural, and academic events in honour of George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albanians. The programme brings together citizens, scholars, and delegations from Albanian territories and the Arbëresh diaspora from Italy. The organisation “Shqiptaria” [Albanian-ness] coordinates the activities.
The day opens at 09:00 with wreath-laying ceremonies at the Skanderbeg statue in Prishtina’s Skanderbeg Square. Kosova institutions and Arbëresh delegations also hold official meetings at the same time. They focus on the preservation of Arbëresh identity and the strengthening of cultural cooperation.
At 10:00, the Institute of History holds a scientific symposium dedicated to Skanderbeg’s life and legacy. Researchers examine his military leadership and his role in shaping Albanian national identity across centuries.
At 13:00, an exhibition opens in Prishtina’s Mother Teresa Square under the title “George Kastrioti – Skanderbeg in National Art”. The display presents artistic interpretations of Skanderbeg across different historical periods.
A central parade begins at 14:00 and brings a festive dimension to the programme. Arbëresh artistic groups and folklore ensembles take part. The procession moves through Zahir Pajaziti Square, Mother Teresa Square, and Skanderbeg Square.
At 16:00, a central concert takes place in Prishtina’s Skanderbeg Square. Evening activities continue with an alternative artistic programme titled “Skanderbeg Party”. Organisers say the events honour the legacy of Skanderbeg and reinforce cultural unity among Albanians worldwide.
The programme closes with a structured sequence of ceremonies throughout the day. Homage events take place at 09:00 in Skanderbeg Square. Institutional meetings follow from 09:00 to 12:00. The symposium runs at 10:00. The exhibition opens at 13:00. The parade takes place from 14:00 to 16:00. The concert begins at 16:00 and the final evening programme concludes at 20:00.
