Gjirokastër attracts German tourists drawn to history, architecture and culture

TIRANA, May 7 – German tourists show rising interest in Gjirokastër, turning the historic southern Albanian city into a key destination in Albania. Visitors explore its architecture, cobblestone streets, and cultural heritage.

Renata and Wolfgang, a German couple, visit Gjirokastër this spring during a longer trip across Albania. Spring travel suits them because of mild weather, while summer heat discourages visits. They planned the trip for several years before travelling after retirement, and they now spend six weeks in the country. A two-day stay in Gjirokastër follows advice from a tour guide.

The walk to the castle becomes one of the main highlights of their visit. Local hospitality leaves a strong impression, with both visitors describing people as warm, helpful, and consistently friendly. They report no negative experiences.

Earlier, the couple said limited information about Albania shaped their initial expectations. Direct travel changed that view, as they express surprise at what they discover during the journey.

Gjirokastër’s old town, the castle, and the stone-paved road leading up to it complete their experience. They walk the route on foot and describe it as visually striking and unique. Albania, they conclude, exceeds expectations and merits strong recommendation as a travel destination.
