Opposition protest held in central Tirana

TIRANA, May 8 – An opposition protest took place in central Tirana on Friday evening, gathering supporters along “Dëshmorët e Kombit” boulevard in front of the Prime Minister’s Office. The demonstra ion started at around 19:30 and formed part of a series of opposition rallies against the government.

Unlike previous protests, organizers did not set up a stage in the main square. After remaining for about an hour near the Prime Minister’s Office, protesters marched through several central roads of the capital and toward other state institutions.

Meanwhile, police forces blocked parts of the route and deployed near government buildings. Tensions later arose between protesters and police officers as demonstrators attempted to continue the march. Police used tear gas and water cannons, while some protesters threw pyrotechnic devices and Molotov cocktails toward police lines.

At the same time, authorities imposed temporary traffic restrictions and partial road closures in several areas of central Tirana. According to the opposition, the protest focused on issues including corruption allegations, governance, rising prices, the economic situation and emigration.
