Lamallari at the UN: Albania Strengthens Its Role in Migration Management

Minister of Interior Besfort Lamallari addressed the International Migration Forum at the United Nations and reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to safe, orderly, and legal migration.

During his speech, Lamallari stressed that Albania supports migration policies based on human rights, international cooperation, and stronger engagement with the Albanian diaspora.

Furthermore, he said Albania continues to strengthen its role as a reliable partner in modern migration management and European integration.

Lamallari also underlined the strong impact of migration on Albania’s economic and social development.

According to him, Albania has followed a comprehensive approach since the adoption of the Global Compact for Migration. He said the country has worked closely with the International Organization for Migration, the UN Migration Network, and international partners.

In addition, Albania prepared its Voluntary Report for the 2023–2025 period with the support of international organizations and local institutions.

Lamallari highlighted three key areas of progress.

First, Albania improved migration data systems and strengthened evidence-based policymaking. He said the National Migration Strategy 2024–2030 aligns national policies with the 23 objectives of the Global Compact for Migration.

Moreover, the strategy strengthens institutional coordination and protects the rights of migrants and refugees. It also supports their integration into Albanian society.

Second, Albania expanded regular migration pathways and labor mobility through regional cooperation in the Western Balkans and broader bilateral partnerships.

At the same time, these efforts create safer opportunities for migrant workers and respond to labor market needs. They also strengthen ties with Albanian diaspora communities.

Third, Lamallari said Albania improved its migration management capacities through stronger coordination, emergency planning, and border management based on human rights standards.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to improve return and reintegration policies. They now provide counseling, tailored support, and sustainable local reintegration programs.

Finally, Lamallari reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to international migration standards and regional cooperation. He said the country will continue investing in data-based policies, expanding safe migration pathways, and strengthening protection mechanisms for migrants.
