Europe Day: EU Ambassador, Gonzato says Albania plays key role in European Union security and future

TIRANA, May 9 – European Union Ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato marked Europe Day during the opening of Europe Week under the motto “Open Space”.

Speaking at the event, Gonzato said the European Union has taken steps to protect stability and democratic values at a time when global conflicts threaten peace and security. He stressed that Albania holds an important role in the continent’s stability and security during its European Union accession process.

According to him, meeting European Union standards and strengthening the rule of law in Albania represent strategic investments for the future of both the country and the region. Gonzato also described enlargement as one of the European Union’s strongest tools for promoting democracy, stability, and prosperity across Europe.

At the same time, he underlined that the “Fundamentals” cluster opened first and will close last in the accession process. He said there are no shortcuts to membership and no avoidance of required criteria. Albania, he added, remains focused on fulfilling all standards within an ambitious timeframe.

Meanwhile, Gonzato stressed the importance of defending European values in a period marked by growing global threats. He referred to freedom, justice, and equality as the foundations of Europe and called for stronger commitment to stability and international partnerships.

He also highlighted European Union support for Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia. According to Gonzato, the bloc continues work to strengthen security capacities, counter disinformation, and defend international law. He added that a just and lasting peace cannot exist without the agreement of Ukraine and Europe.

Europe Week will run from 9 to 22 May and will include more than 55 cultural activities across Albania. The programme features theatre performances, exhibitions, dance and music events, interdisciplinary activities, and public discussions.
