TIRANA, May 12 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania has never had a “Plan B” regarding European Union integration during the signing of a financing agreement between the European Investment Bank and Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania, which targets support for small and medium-sized enterprises.
He said Albania continues to insist on joining the European Union and expects full membership in the future.
There is no alternative to individual freedom and the rule of law, he said. Albania has never considered another direction, he added, linking the stance to the country’s historical experience.
Alternative development paths would imply systems without legal equality, he said. Albania does not want to return to such conditions. He noted that global circumstances have changed, while core principles remain unchanged.
He also said laws alone are not sufficient for European integration. The European Union provides knowledge that no other global actor offers, he said.
That knowledge represents Albania’s main opportunity, he said. The country aims to benefit from it fully and relies on partner support, he added.
Rama said Albania has made significant progress despite remaining challenges. He said further work is needed before the country joins the European Union.
