Early warning systems key for environmental risk management

TIRANA, May 12 – Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj highlighted early warning systems as a key tool in managing environmental risks during the international conference “United for Climate”, in a podcast moderated by Blendi Salaj, where he discussed the National Climate Adaptation Plan 2026–2036.

He said the national plan includes 66 concrete measures across the country. He added that these measures aim to become implementable projects in strategic economic sectors, including agriculture, tourism, transport, and other areas linked to sustainable development.

Jaupaj said the measures are designed to strengthen national resilience to climate change. He also said they aim to reinforce institutional capacity in environmental risk management.

He added that the next step focuses on securing financing for implementation.

Meanwhile, he said Albania has secured a major project under the Green Climate Fund worth 40 million USD. He explained that the project will support investments in the hydrometeorological system to improve access to data on floods and fires. He also said it focuses on strengthening early warning systems.

Early warning leads to early response, Jaupaj said. He added that early response saves lives, protects the economy, and prevents damage. He stressed that such investments represent a national priority in addressing climate challenges.
