Italian PM Meloni thanks PM Rama over migration protocol as Italy and Albania reaffirm cooperation framework

TIRANA, May 13 – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanked Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama following recent public discussion on the migration cooperation agreement between the two countries. The exchange followed media coverage of remarks linked to an interview by Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha in foreign outlets.

Hoxha later said his comments were misinterpreted. Rama then reaffirmed the agreement on migrant reception centres in Gjadër and said it remains in force. He added that it will continue as long as Italy maintains its support.

In a post on social media, Meloni reshared Rama’s statement. She also expressed appreciation with the words “Grazie Edi!”.

Earlier, Rama underlined that the protocol between Albania and Italy reflects ongoing cooperation. He said it remains valid for the period agreed by both sides. He also addressed international reporting on the issue and said the arrangement continues without changes as originally established.
