Rama: Trump Forced Europe to Face Its Weaknesses

Edi Rama said U.S. President Donald Trump pushed Europe to recognize its weaknesses and rethink its future security strategy. He made the remarks during the Lennart Meri Conference in Estonia.

First, Rama argued that Europe should take Trump seriously, even if not every statement should be interpreted literally. According to him, Trump exposed Europe’s military, political, and economic vulnerabilities.

Moreover, Rama linked Albania’s European Union integration process to the geopolitical changes caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He said Europe accelerated enlargement only after realizing that geopolitical threats had become real.

In addition, Rama claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin indirectly pushed Europe to wake up and move faster on enlargement. At the same time, he said Trump forced Europe to become more self-aware and organized.

Furthermore, Rama warned against separating military spending from economic development and democratic stability. He stressed that defense investments must support industrial productivity, competitiveness, and integrated European procurement systems.

However, Rama cautioned that Europe could become militarily stronger but politically weaker if rearmament increases alongside recession, inequality, migration fears, and declining trust in mainstream political parties.

As a result, he warned that far-right nationalism and neo-fascist movements could grow stronger across Europe. Therefore, he urged European leaders to balance security policies with democratic resilience and social stability.

Meanwhile, Rama emphasized that Europe’s challenge is not only about increasing weapons and military budgets. Instead, he said Europe must ensure that rearmament strengthens democracy rather than destabilizing it.

Finally, Rama called for a modern and integrated defense strategy based on innovation, industrial renewal, technology, and democratic resilience. He argued that these elements are essential for Europe’s long-term security and stability.
