Andromaqi Gjergji: Albania’s First Female Academician Remembered

Andromaqi Gjergji was born on May 20, 1928 in Korçë.

She became the first Albanian woman member of the Academy of Sciences of Albania in 1999. She is widely recognized as Albania’s first female academician.

She studied in Korçë and later attended the Higher Pedagogical Institute in Tirana. She specialized in ethnology and later studied history at the University of Tirana.

She worked at major research institutions, including the Institute of History and Linguistics and the Institute of Folk Culture. She helped build the foundations of modern Albanian ethnography.

Her research focused on Albanian material and spiritual culture. She paid special attention to traditional clothing.

She published key works such as “Albanian Clothing Through the Centuries” and “Ways of Life in the 13th–20th Centuries.”

She also co-authored major studies on Albanian art and folk dress. She contributed to UNESCO-related programs and international conferences.

She received the title “Grand Master of Work” for her contribution to science and culture.

She died on July 8, 2015, leaving behind a major scholarly legacy in Albanian cultural heritage studies.
