Ruling Socialist Party MP Balla: Germany praises Albania on negotiation chapters 23 and 24

TIRANA, Thursday, May 21 – Albania has received positive evaluations on European Union accession chapters 23 and 24, ruling Socialist Party parliamentary group chairman Taulant Balla said on Thursday. Germany views Albania as a model among candidate countries, citing justice reform, vetting, and efforts against corruption and organised crime.

Meanwhile, the negotiation process has entered a key phase this week. In addition, European Union working groups have passed the review process to the Committee of Permanent Representatives. Albanian institutions have completed extensive work on membership obligations.

At the same time, more than 92 key gaps have been identified during the process. Furthermore, chapters 23 and 24 traditionally open first and close last in EU negotiations. Albania has received positive assessments in both chapters.

Separately, Italy and Austria have proposed accelerating European Union integration for Western Balkan countries, including Albania and Montenegro, while Moldova is included in the broader enlargement discussions. Ukraine will follow a separate approach.

Meanwhile, Germany supports a phased accession model. In addition, Albania should continue to meet obligations agreed with the European Commission. Ratification by member states may take time due to involvement of national parliaments and citizens.

Finally, Albania now stands closer than ever to European integration. Balla also expressed support for opposition participation in the country’s EU path.
