Ombudsman contacts Israeli counterpart over Albanian activist

TIRANA, May 21 – The Ombudsman of Albania, Endrit Shabani, contacted Matanyahu Englman, the Israeli State Comptroller and Ombudsman. He requested full guarantees for the rights, physical integrity, and treatment of Albanian citizen Baki Goxhaj. Israeli authorities detained Goxhaj during an operation against the humanitarian initiative “Global Sumud Flotilla”.

Shabani is also following the case in his capacity as President of the Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen.

He said he expected Englman to ensure dignified treatment of Goxhaj. He referred to international human rights standards and shared Mediterranean principles.

The Ombudsman institution said it continued to follow the case. It said it would act until authorities ensured full guarantees for Goxhaj’s safety, rights, and secure return.
