Western Balkans European Union summit in Tivat, RTSH journalist reports from Montenegro

TIRANA, June 5 – The Western Balkans–European Union summit takes place today in Tivat, Montenegro. It runs under the theme “Shared Prosperity and Stability of the European Union and the Western Balkans”. Leaders from the region attend the meeting. Senior European Union officials also attend. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama participates as well.

Meanwhile, RTSH journalist Denada Shkodrani reports from the Port of Montenegro. She says Montenegro stands close to full European Union membership. Shkodrani e also says Albania has entered a decisive phase of its accession process. She adds that officials expect the closure of the first three negotiation chapters in the coming weeks.

At the same time, Rama attends a dinner hosted by Montenegro’s president with European Union and Western Balkan leaders. They discuss regional integration. They also discuss closer European Union ties toward full membership for the six Western Balkan countries.

The reporter also tells that PM Rama is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings. She confirms talks with the Irish Prime Minister and another meeting after the plenary session. Leaders gathered around 10:30 for the arrival and to take a family photo next. They then will hold a closed plenary session at around 12:00.
In addition, the journalist says Albanian media show strong interest in Rama during the visit. And the Montenegrin public media plan an interview with him. The interview will focus on bilateral relations and European Union support through the Growth Plan.

On the matter, the reporter highlights key cross-border projects, which include the Buna River bridge linking Albania and Montenegro. They also include EUnion-funded investments in the Velipoja–Ulqin area and a planned railway connection between Montenegro and Albania.

The summit comes six months after the Brussels meeting. It aims to advance European Union integration. It also aims to strengthen political and economic cooperation in the region.
