The UNESCO has officially designated Lake Shkodra as a transboundary Biosphere Reserve. As a result, the lake has joined the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This recognition highlights the ecological importance of one of the region’s most valuable natural treasures.
Prime Minister Edi Rama shared a video from the lake and described the decision as an important moment for Albania and its natural heritage. He said the UNESCO recognition reflects both diplomatic efforts and the country’s commitment to protecting this unique ecosystem.
Rama welcomed the news and emphasized that Lake Shkodra has now joined the list of globally protected UNESCO treasures. He also highlighted Albania’s responsible stewardship of its natural heritage.
Moreover, the new status is expected to strengthen environmental protection measures around the lake. At the same time, it will support sustainable development and encourage the preservation of biodiversity in the area.
Therefore, the UNESCO designation marks another significant achievement for Albania’s environmental conservation efforts and international recognition of its natural wealth.
