The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Tonin Harapi, recognizing him as one of the most important figures in Albanian national music.
He was born on June 9, 1926, in Shkodër. He grew up in a rich musical environment. He learned from prominent Albanian musicians such as Palokë Kurti, Frano Ndoja, Martin Gjoka, Mikel Koliqi, Zef Shestani, and Prenk Jakova.
Furthermore, after World War II, Harapi continued his artistic development as an autodidact. He later studied at the Arts Lyceum in Tirana and at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.
In addition, he worked for many years as a composition teacher at the Tirana Conservatory. He trained several generations of Albanian composers.
His work covers nearly all musical genres. He composed opera, operetta, symphonic and choral music, stage works, romances, children’s songs, and folk arrangements.
As a result, Harapi left a strong mark on Albanian musical history through his creative output.
He died in 1992, when he received the title “People’s Artist.” Later, in 2016, he was awarded the decoration “Honor of the Nation.”
Since 2019, the new concert hall at the “Jordan Misja” Arts Lyceum has carried his name, preserving his legacy for future generations.
