President Bajram Begaj attended the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) Summit in Sofia on Tuesday. The summit marked the 30th anniversary of SEECP. Leaders gathered to discuss regional unity, security, and sustainable development.
During the meeting, Begaj emphasized the importance of EU integration for the Western Balkans. He also called for stronger political and economic cooperation across Southeast Europe.
Furthermore, he highlighted the need for better infrastructure links and greater energy resilience throughout the region. Begaj described SEECP as a driving force for regional progress. He said the initiative continues to shape a common European future.
Moreover, he stressed that deeper regional cooperation is a necessity. According to him, stronger cooperation can improve connectivity and create more opportunities for citizens.
He pointed to Albania’s efforts to develop major infrastructure projects. These include Corridor VIII, Porto Romano, and the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor.
In addition, Begaj said regional cooperation must produce tangible results. He called for greater progress in infrastructure, trade, mobility, and economic development.
He argued that when one country advances, the entire region benefits from greater stability and growth.
At the same time, Begaj reaffirmed Albania’s commitment to regional cooperation. He described it as a key pillar for stability, development, and European integration.
Meanwhile, he highlighted Albania’s progress on reforms and EU accession. He said the country aims to complete its membership process within this decade.
“European integration remains our central objective,” Begaj stated.
Furthermore, he noted that SEECP members share a common understanding. They want the EU enlargement process to remain credible, predictable, and based on results.
He also stressed that the European future of the Western Balkans is vital for the stability of the entire region. At the conclusion of the summit, leaders adopted the Sofia Declaration. Subsequently, they officially transferred the SEECP presidency to Romania.
Begaj welcomed Romania’s upcoming leadership. He expressed confidence that it will continue to deliver meaningful results. During his visit to Sofia, Begaj also met with Rumen Radev.
The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional cooperation. They also reviewed Albania’s reform progress. Finally, Bulgaria reaffirmed its support for Albania’s accession to the European Union.
