TKOB prepares tribute evening for Albanian bass-baritone Lukë Kaçaj

The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet (TKOB) is preparing a special evening dedicated to the great Albanian bass-baritone Lukë Kaçaj.

The event will pay tribute to one of the most powerful voices in Albanian opera. It will also honor his life, marked by artistic achievement and personal hardship.

Lukë Kaçaj (1924–2001) studied music from an early age with the Franciscan friars in Shkodër. He later worked in the State Choir and the Army Ensemble between 1947 and 1950, performing as both soloist and choir member.

In 1953, he gained international recognition at the Second Youth Festival in Bucharest. There, he performed Verdi’s Don Carlos aria and attracted wide attention across Europe.

In 1955, he competed at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and ranked fourth among 170 participants. In Moscow, audiences began calling him the “Albanian Chaliapin,” comparing him to the legendary Russian bass Fyodor Chaliapin.

He returned to Albania and performed leading roles in both Albanian and international operas. However, his career was interrupted in 1973 when he was imprisoned until 1978.

After his release, he worked in manual labor before later being honored posthumously with the title “Honor of the Nation.”

On the 25th anniversary of his passing, TKOB will revisit both the artistic legacy and personal story of a figure who left a lasting mark on Albanian culture and music.
