Hoxha: Greece remains a strong supporter of Albania’s EU membership

Greece remains a strong supporter of Albania’s European Union membership, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha said on Thursday.

Speaking to journalists from EU member states, Hoxha described relations between Albania and Greece as stronger than ever. He said both countries are working to address long-standing bilateral issues and strengthen cooperation.

“Our relations with Greece are going through one of their most positive periods,” Hoxha said.

He stressed that both governments share a strong commitment to move forward. As a result, they continue efforts to address unresolved issues and deepen bilateral ties.

Moreover, Hoxha highlighted the willingness of both sides to tackle pending matters, including the delimitation of maritime zones.

“Both countries want to move forward and place all issues in the right perspective,” he said.

He noted that Albania and Greece tried twice to reach an agreement on maritime boundaries through negotiations. However, the talks did not produce a final deal.

Consequently, both governments agreed to seek a legal solution through the International Court of Justice.

“We tried to reach an agreement through negotiations, but we could not finalize one,” Hoxha said. “Therefore, we decided to take the issue to the court.”

He explained that Albania and Greece will submit their respective cases to the International Court of Justice, which will ultimately issue a ruling.

Meanwhile, Hoxha praised Greece’s role in supporting EU enlargement. He described Athens as a key ally in Albania’s accession process.

“We see Greece as a strong supporter of enlargement and of Albania’s membership in the European Union,” he said.

Hoxha said Albania continues to work closely with partner countries during upcoming EU Council presidencies. He pointed to cooperation with Ireland, Lithuania and Greece as part of broader efforts to advance Albania’s European integration agenda.

According to Hoxha, this cooperation reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the enlargement process and supporting Albania’s path toward EU membership.
