TIRANA, June 12 – Archaeologists have uncovered previously unknown mosaics in Elbasan. The discovery came during excavations under the project “The Roman-Byzantine Quarter outside the Walls of Castrum Scampis – The Early Christian Basilica Extra Muros.”
The findings reveal an earlier phase of the Early Christian basilica outside the walls of the ancient city of Scampis. The Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences carried out the excavations in the Scampis area. The site lies opposite the main gate of Elbasan Castle.
Meanwhile, researchers identified several newly discovered mosaics. Among them, a well-preserved polychrome mosaic stands out with a depiction of the Eucharist. In addition, archaeologists found an inscription that mentions two donors, including the deaconess Euridyce.
The National Council of Material Cultural Heritage approved the project. At the same time, the discoveries expand knowledge of Elbasan’s history and cultural heritage. In response, the National Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Municipality of Elbasan are preparing a rehabilitation project for the area surrounding the monument. The plan also includes restoration and conservation works. As a result, authorities aim to protect the site, enhance its value, and open it to the public and visitors.
