TIRANA, June 15 – Six years ago, on June 15, 2020, poet, scholar and archaeologist Moikom Zeqo passed away.
He was born on June 3, 1949 in Durrës. His family originated from Libohova.
Zeqo began his studies in 1967 at the Faculty of History and Philology. He graduated from the University of Tirana in 1971 in language and literature.
From 1971 to 1974, he worked as a journalist and literary editor at the newspaper Drita. He later worked as a teacher in Rrogozhina from 1974 to 1976. Between 1979 and 1987, he served as a researcher at the Archaeological Museum of Durrës. From 1987 to 1990, he worked as a specialist in ancient art at the Academy of Sciences in Tirana.
In 1991, he was appointed head of the Committee of Culture and later that year served as Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. He was elected a Socialist Party member of parliament in 1991 and 1992 and served until 1996. From 1997 to 2005, he directed the National Historical Museum.
Moikom Zeqo was awarded the “Master of Arts” decoration. He authored 62 books in prose, poetry, archaeology and historical studies, as well as screenplays for film and television productions on archaeological and cultural themes.
His works have been translated into multiple languages, including English, French, Greek, Italian, German and others. His writing often combined ancient culture with modern thought, building a bridge between tradition and contemporary vision.
He also held three personal painting exhibitions.
