Albania Signs Three Council of Europe Conventions on Rule of Law, Democracy, and Human Rights

Albania signed three important conventions at the Council of Europe headquarters in Strasbourg, strengthening its commitment to the rule of law, democracy, and human rights, Justice Minister Toni Gogu said.

He stated that the first convention focuses on the use of artificial intelligence. According to him, technology must remain under the law. At the same time, it must protect human dignity and uphold the rule of law.

The second convention focuses on the protection of lawyers. In particular, it ensures that every lawyer defending a citizen is protected from pressure. This includes pressure from the state, from parties in legal proceedings, or from any other source.

Meanwhile, the third convention concerns Ukraine. It establishes a commission on claims related to the war. Albania, he said, has supported Ukraine from day one. In addition, he reaffirmed Albania’s backing of President Volodymyr Zelensky and stated that the aggressor must pay.

Overall, Gogu emphasized that all three conventions reinforce a key principle: rule of law and democracy are strengthened through binding legislation, not just political statements.

He concluded with a clear message: “Signing is the beginning. Ratification is the promise. Implementation is the proof.”
