Silvio Gonzato took part in an event marking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.
UNHCR Albania, Albania’s Ministry of Interior, and other partners organized the event in Tirana.
During his remarks, Gonzato stressed that the Refugee Convention remains a cornerstone of international protection for people fleeing persecution, violence, and conflict.
Furthermore, he said the commitment to protecting refugees has not weakened over time. Instead, it has grown stronger through continued international cooperation.
Moreover, Gonzato described refugee protection as both a moral obligation and an important part of Albania’s European integration process.
He emphasized that a strong, rights-based asylum system is a key requirement for membership in the European Union.
At the same time, the EU ambassador highlighted Albania’s efforts to strengthen its asylum and migration framework in line with European standards.
In addition, Gonzato reaffirmed the European Union’s support for Albania in this field. He noted that the EU continues to provide technical assistance, expertise, and financial support through the EU4Migration programme.
As a result, cooperation between Albania and the European Union continues to strengthen the country’s capacity to protect refugees and manage migration effectively.
Overall, Gonzato underlined that respect for refugee rights remains a fundamental European value and an important element of Albania’s path toward EU membership.
