Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed the European Parliament’s approval of the new EU return regulation as a major achievement for Italy and Europe.
Speaking in a video message from the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, Meloni said the regulation marks a historic decision. She added that the measure largely reflects the efforts of the Italian government. As a result, EU countries will be able to return more quickly those who do not have the right to remain in the European Union.
Furthermore, the regulation allows member states to establish return centers in third countries. According to Meloni, this provision follows the approach introduced by Italy through its protocol with Albania.
She described the agreement as an innovative solution. Moreover, she said that left-wing political groups in Italy and across Europe had strongly opposed the initiative. However, she argued that her government succeeded in turning it into a tool available to all European countries.
Meloni also highlighted her government’s broader migration policy goals. She said Italy aims to protect its borders, significantly reduce migrant arrivals, combat human trafficking networks, and swiftly return people who do not qualify to stay.
Finally, she stated that her government had fulfilled its promise to change Europe through courage, patience, and determination. She added that the government would continue to implement its program and move forward with its agenda.
