Begaj: Scientific Research Is Key for Albania’s European Path

Bajram Begaj attended an international scientific conference in Tirana focused on the importance of toponymy in shaping Albanian cultural identity.

The event was organized by the Institute of Anthropology under the Academy of Sciences. Researchers and academics discussed how place names reflect language, history, and identity.

Begaj said that scientific research plays a crucial role at a decisive moment for Albania’s European integration. He emphasized that Albania moves toward the EU without losing its identity, but by strengthening it.

He also stated that Europe is built on the coexistence of languages, traditions, and historical experiences. As a result, Albanian identity becomes an added value within the European cultural space.

Furthermore, Begaj highlighted that linguistic and anthropological studies confirm Albania’s historical and cultural belonging to the Mediterranean and Europe.

He added that integration is not only an institutional process, but also a reconnection with a space where Albanians have always been present culturally.

In addition, he praised research that includes diaspora communities such as Arbëreshë and Arvanites. He also stressed the importance of involving youth and schools in such projects.

Finally, Begaj encouraged continued cooperation between scientific institutions, schools, and communities. He said that understanding place names also means understanding responsibility for the future.
