82nd anniversary of genocide against Çamëria commemorated

TIRANA, June 26 – Albania is marking the 82nd anniversary of the genocide against Cham Albanians through a series of events focused on historical memory, justice and cultural heritage. Meanwhile, Cham Week began in Tirana on “Dëshmorët e Kombit” boulevard with the installation “I Love Çamëria”, presented as a symbol of remembrance and reflection.

The chairman of the Patriotic Association “Çamëria”, Liljan Idrizaj, highlighted the importance of the date as a moment of historical awareness for Cham Albanians and the wider public. He said 27 June 1944 remains one of the darkest dates in Cham history. He added that it marks the start of expulsions, massacres and ethnic cleansing against the Albanian population.

In addition, Democratic Party for Justice, Integration and Unity leader Shpëtim Idrizi called for stronger institutional and national engagement on the Cham issue. He said Çamëria remains part of the Albanian national identity. He added that justice for the victims remains a historical obligation.

At the same time, the Parliament of Albania, together with the Patriotic Association “Çamëria”, is organizing a commemorative event titled “82nd anniversary of the genocide against Cham Albanians”. Deputies, researchers and public figures take part in the event.

Cham Week continues with several activities in the following days. It concludes with homage ceremonies at the memorial cemetery “Trëndafilat e Çamërisë” [Roses of Çamëria] in Kllogjer, Saranda, where remains of 2,900 Cham Albanians rest.

Historical records show that more than 30,000 Albanians were expelled and over 3,000 were killed in 1944. They also show that around 2,400 people died during the journey to Albania due to lack of food and hardship.
