TIRANA, June 30 – Albania marks the 190th anniversary of the first publication of The Songs of Milosao, the masterpiece of Jeronim De Rada that is widely regarded as the foundation of Albanian Romanticism.
First published in Naples on June 30, 1836, the work introduced a new artistic and national spirit. Through a lyrical narrative, De Rada tells the story of two young lovers who challenge social divisions. Their story ends in tragedy with the death of the young woman and Milosao’s death in battle. However, the work emphasizes equality in love and sacrifice for the homeland.
Meanwhile, De Rada structured the work as a lyrical novel that blends lyricism with epic elements.
In addition, the book emerged at a time when the Arbëresh community preserved and developed the Albanian language and culture in exile. It became a powerful expression of national identity and devotion to the homeland.
Drawing on the rich spiritual heritage of Arbëresh folklore, The Songs of Milosao also earned international recognition. Victor Hugo praised it as “a perfect romantic work.”
