Strik: Albania Must Enforce EU Standards in Protected Areas

Following the conclusion of a fact-finding mission in the Vjosa-Narta protected area, European Parliament rapporteur Tineke Strik called on Albanian authorities to fully enforce European Union standards for construction in protected zones and to intensify efforts against corruption.

At a press conference, Strik said Albania must respect EU legislation and environmental standards regardless of land ownership status.

She emphasized that even private land must comply with European environmental rules.

Strik also praised the work of the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) and stressed the importance of institutional support for its investigations.

She said all institutions must cooperate with SPAK and insisted that politicians should not receive protection from investigations, as justice must “clean house” when necessary.

Furthermore, Strik reaffirmed her support for Albania’s European integration process. She said her goal is to help Albania meet the standards required for EU membership.

Finally, she said she will continue to support Albania’s EU path and will not act as a blocking factor in the process.
