Albania and North Macedonia to Introduce New Protocol for Joint Customs Controls

Albania and North Macedonia are strengthening customs cooperation by preparing a new protocol for the implementation of their Joint Border Controls Agreement. The initiative aims to improve the efficiency of border inspections, facilitate trade, and reduce waiting times at border crossings.

During a visit to the Qafë Thanë–Qafasan joint border crossing, officials from both countries, led by Albanian Customs Director General Besmir Beja and North Macedonia’s Customs Director Boban Nikolovski, met with representatives of the OSCE to discuss the practical implementation and finalization of the protocol.

The new document will harmonize customs procedures, strengthen joint inspections, and improve coordination between the two customs administrations in line with European Union standards and regional integration goals.

Officials said the protocol will help speed up trade flows, make better use of resources, ease the movement of travelers, and increase confidence among the business community. OSCE representatives welcomed the initiative as an important step toward stronger cross-border cooperation, enhanced regional security, and more modern and efficient border management.
