Next NATO summit to put Albania and PM Rama in international spotlight

TIRANA, July 13 – Albania will host the 37th NATO Summit after the alliance concluded its 36th summit in Ankara. Analysts say the decision highlights the strategic importance of Albania and the Western Balkans for NATO.

Experts say the alliance has renewed its focus on the region as Europe reshapes its security architecture following Russia’s war against Ukraine. They view the Tirana summit as a sign of NATO’s stronger political and military commitment to southeastern Europe. Speaking to Anadolu, analyst Anisa Bahiti said the event will give Albania unprecedented international visibility. She added that the summit could also encourage new investment in strategic defence sectors through NATO allies.

Meanwhile, Albania continues to strengthen its role within the alliance. The country joined NATO in 2009 and has contributed to missions in Afghanistan, Kosova and Iraq. It has also increased defence spending and expanded its military capabilities in line with NATO objectives. Analysts say the alliance considers stability in the Western Balkans essential for European security and for limiting Russian influence in the region.

The Tirana summit will focus on implementing decisions adopted in Ankara. Expected topics include defence production, support for Ukraine, artificial intelligence, hybrid threats, critical infrastructure protection and regional security. Experts also say the summit will reinforce Albania’s diplomatic profile and underline its growing role within NATO.
