Around 60 inmates at Drenova Prison are expected to be released under Albania’s new penal amnesty law, which is scheduled to be implemented on July 15.

Under the amnesty, eligible male prisoners will receive a one-year sentence reduction, while eligible female prisoners will benefit from a one-and-a-half-year reduction. Individuals prosecuted by SPAK (the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Structure) and those convicted of particularly serious criminal offenses are excluded from the amnesty.

The penal amnesty law was approved by Parliament on June 18, receiving 84 votes in favor, with no votes against or abstentions.

Justice Minister Toni Gogu stated that 466 inmates will be released as a result of the law. According to him, the beneficiaries include 11 women and one child.

Gogu also announced that 869 convicted individuals will receive reductions in their prison sentences under the amnesty law. He stressed that the implementation process is being carried out by the relevant institutions in accordance with the criteria established under the current legislation.
