Rama: “Open Balkan” was controversial because of its political backers, not its objectives

Prime Minister Edi Rama said the “Open Balkan” initiative was considered “a terrible idea” only because he and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić backed it.

“It was a terrible idea for one reason only: Vučić and I were behind it. If we removed our names and replaced them with five others, people would consider it an excellent idea. This is how everything works in the Balkans,” Rama said in an interview with Euronews Serbia.

Rama described cooperation with Vučić as challenging, saying that the Serbian president is “always a difficult partner.”

He also praised Montenegro’s transformation, saying the country has made remarkable progress but still needs to continue its efforts.

“Montenegro has transformed in an extraordinary way. I take my hat off to them and respect their achievements. They have made great progress, but that alone is not enough,” Rama said.

Rama added that Europe now needs the Western Balkans as much as the Western Balkans needs Europe.
