Prime Minister Edi Rama described the closure of three EU negotiation chapters as another important milestone in Albania’s European integration process.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Ireland’s Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence Thomas Byrne and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos after the ninth Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference, Rama said the achievement reflects Albania’s progress and ongoing reforms.
“Today marks another important milestone on Albania’s irreversible path toward the European Union,” Rama said.
He added that closing the three chapters represents recognition that Albania is moving forward, reforms are delivering results and the country is becoming more prepared to take on EU membership responsibilities.
Furthermore, Rama said the integration process depends on results and merit from both Albania and the European Union.
“Albania delivers results, and the EU responds with results. This is the essence of a credible process based on merit from both sides,” he said.
Rama thanked Ireland’s Minister Thomas Byrne and EU Commissioner Marta Kos for their support throughout the process.
Moreover, he stressed that Albania continues working to bring European standards closer to citizens, strengthen institutions and create more opportunities.
According to Rama, citizens’ growing expectations represent an important motivation to continue reforms.
“People want more. Citizens are increasingly less tolerant of what still does not work. Therefore, we must continue moving forward and deliver results for our citizens,” he said.
Rama concluded that achieving concrete results remains the best way to raise standards and strengthen Albania’s institutions on its path toward full EU membership.
