TIRANA, July 16 – An inter-institutional working group held its first meeting to review Albania’s National Strategy and Action Plan for Integrated Waste Management, as well as the National Sectoral Waste Plan.
Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj said the revised strategy would align the objectives of the European Union Waste Framework Directive with Albania’s national priorities. He said the document would also support the country’s goal of closing Chapter 27 of the accession negotiations. In addition, it will outline investment plans for the waste sector over the next decade and identify the financial mechanisms needed for implementation.
Jaupaj said the strategy would serve as the country’s roadmap for waste sector reform until 2035. He added that the government would work closely with international partners and responsible institutions to prepare a practical and fully funded document. According to the minister, the strategy will lay the foundations for a circular economy and bring Albania closer to European Union standards.
Meanwhile, Jaupaj stressed that the process requires the participation of central and local government, international partners and the private sector. He said broad cooperation is essential to build a modern waste management system and accelerate Albania’s path toward European Union membership.
