Prime Minister Edi Rama visited the “Smart City” Command and Control Center on Thursday, stating that Albania’s public safety system is entering a new era through real-time monitoring technology.
Rama said the new system is designed to detect and prevent potential threats in real time by immediately alerting the monitoring center. He added that the project will be gradually expanded across the entire country.
“All parents with children in school should feel reassured. Everything takes time. There is no project that does not face obstacles, but today we have reached a point where this project has come to life, and we will continue expanding it throughout the country.
The state’s efforts to elevate public safety management to a new level are ongoing.
The system has been designed to provide real-time alerts about potential threats, rather than simply storing information after an incident has occurred. If someone pulls a knife out of their pocket anywhere—not only in schools—the system immediately notifies the monitoring center.
If a suspect tries to hide during a search operation, the system enables the police to track the direction in which that person is moving. It also identifies vehicles before they are stopped and informs officers of their location.
Likewise, the difficult history of random roadside vehicle checks and the confrontations that often followed between police officers and drivers will become a thing of the past. The system alerts the monitoring center as soon as a vehicle with unpaid obligations leaves a parking area and enters the road network, notifying authorities that it is in circulation.
We are now also working on another component—body cameras for police officers—which will help systematically improve the ethical relationship between law enforcement officers and citizens. This does not mean incidents will never happen again, but the level of prevention will increase exponentially and the risks will be significantly reduced,” Rama said.
