FM Hoxha attends Washington, D.C. ministerial; Albania strengthens defenses against hybrid threats

TIRANA, July 17 – Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha attended a ministerial meeting on the resurgence of political terrorism in Washington, D.C. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio convened the meeting, which brought together representatives from more than 60 countries.

Hoxha said political extremism and the use of violence to achieve political goals pose a direct threat to democracy. He stressed that democracy leaves no room or justification for political violence.

Meanwhile, the minister said Albania understands the value of freedom after emerging from a brutal communist dictatorship. He noted that the country now stands as a committed NATO ally, a European Union candidate and a close partner of the United States.

In addition, Hoxha called for stronger democratic resilience and closer efforts to counter foreign information manipulation, state-sponsored interference and malicious cyberattacks. He said Albania has strengthened its resilience and capabilities after facing repeated cyber and hybrid attacks from Iran. He added that vigilance and continued investment remain essential.

Finally, Hoxha stressed that international cooperation remains vital because no country is immune to these threats. He called on democratic nations to deepen cooperation, share intelligence, exchange best practices and use all available tools to protect security, democratic institutions and democratic values.
