Tropoja’s artisan workshop preserves heritage and empowers women

An artisan workshop in the heart of Tropoja has become a model for preserving cultural heritage and strengthening women’s economic independence.

With support from the European Union through the EU4Innovation programme, local women artisans are keeping traditional crafts alive while creating new job opportunities for the community.

At the workshop, women transform wool and cotton into carpets, upholstery, traditional clothing, embroidered fabrics, bed covers, bags, and other handmade products. They also produce natural soaps using ingredients such as olive oil, sage, and thyme.

Through EU support, the project has provided looms, sewing machines, digital equipment, and an online platform. The platform helps artisans promote and sell their products beyond Tropoja.

The handmade creations feature traditional designs that reflect the cultural identity of the area. Geometric patterns, eagles, colourful flowers, and symbols inspired by the Albanian Alps preserve stories and traditions passed down through generations.

For many women, the workshop represents much more than a workplace. It provides a stable source of income, a space for cooperation, and a chance to pass their skills on to younger generations.

The initiative combines tradition with innovation. It protects centuries-old crafts while creating new economic opportunities for women and the local community.
