Prime Minister Edi Rama responded today to criticism and calls to cancel the Mountain Package. He said the initiative will help people in mountain areas develop their properties and attract investment.
During an online conversation with citizens, Rama explained that the Mountain Package does not mean selling mountains. Instead, it gives opportunities to people who inherited land or who have cared for orchards and agricultural areas for years but could not obtain the required documents.
He added that the package allows citizens to apply for permits for agro-processing activities and tourism projects. As a result, they can turn their properties into valuable economic assets.
Moreover, Rama said thousands of emigrants have shown interest in investing in mountain regions. He stressed that tourism will play an increasingly important role in Albania’s economy.
The Prime Minister also said the government developed the Mountain Package after years of consultations with local communities. He rejected claims that the initiative threatens property rights.
Albania launched the Mountain Package in 2024 to support development in rural and mountainous areas. The initiative aims to help residents formalize property rights, develop tourism and agricultural activities, and attract investment. It also seeks to reduce depopulation and create new economic opportunities in mountain communities. However, critics have raised concerns about its potential impact on nature and protected areas.
