Medieval Koman settlement preserves Albania’s cultural heritage

TIRANA, July 23 – The Medieval Settlement of Koman remains one of Albania’s most important cultural heritage sites. It lies in the Drin Valley at the foot of Mount Dalmaca.

Albania declared the site a Cultural Monument in 1963. It also received Archaeological Zone A and B status in 2015. The settlement stands at an altitude of 560 to 620 metres above sea level. It combines archaeology, history and natural scenery, making it an important destination for visitors and researchers.

Meanwhile, specialists from the Shkodër Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage carry out daily maintenance despite the difficult terrain and long access routes. Their work helps keep the site accessible throughout the year.

Visitors can explore the remains of the medieval settlement, including residential walls, the ecclesiastical complex, the Church of Saint George, traces of a medieval forge and an extensive necropolis. Together, these structures cover more than 160 hectares.

Each preserved feature highlights the historical and archaeological importance of Koman. The site continues to serve as a key landmark of Albania’s cultural heritage.
